Amen.<\/p>\n<p>(Literal translation: the crucifix is the sign of eternal life.)<\/p>\n<p>This charm to cure bewitchment is attributed to Chattox:<\/p>\n<p>    A Charme<\/p>\n<p>   Three Biters hast thou bitten,<br \/>      The Hart, ill Eye, ill Tonge:<br \/>    Three bitter shall be thy Boote,<br \/>      Father, Sonne, and Holy Ghost<br \/>        a Gods name,<br \/>    Fiue Pater-nosters, fiue Auies,<br \/>      and a Creede,<br \/>    In worship of fiue wounds<br \/>      of our Lord.<\/p>\n<p>(In modern language the last part would read: five Pater-Nosters, five Ave Marias, and a Creed, in the worship of the five wounds of our Lord\u2014the cunning woman would then say these prayers while contemplating the five wounds of Christ.)<\/p>\n<p>A charm to cure one who is bewitched, attributed to Elizabeth Southerns\u2019s family and recorded by Thomas Potts during the 1612 witch trials at Lancaster:   <\/p>\n<p>A Charme<\/p>\n<p>Upon Good-Friday, I will fast while I may<br \/>Untill I heare them knell<br \/>Our Lords owne Bell,<br \/>Lord in his messe<br \/>With his twelve Apostles good,<br \/>What hath he in his hand<br \/>Ligh in leath wand: <br \/>What hath he in his other hand?<br \/>Heavens doore key,<br \/>Open, open Heaven doore keyes,<br \/>Steck, steck hell doore.<br \/>Let Crizum child<br \/>Goe to it Mother mild,<br \/>What is yonder that casts a light so farrandly,<br \/>Mine owne deare Sonne that\u2019s naild to the Tree.<br \/>He is naild sore by the heart and hand,<br \/>And holy harne Panne,<br \/>Well is that man<br \/>That Fryday spell can<br \/>His Childe to learne;<br \/>A Cross of Blew, and another of Red,<br \/>As good Lord was to the Roode.<br \/>Gabriel laid him downe to sleepe<br \/>Upon the ground of holy weepe:<br \/>Good Lord came walking by,<br \/>Sleep\u2019st thou, wak\u2019st thou Gabriel,<br \/>No Lord I am sted with sticke and stake,<br \/>That I can neither sleepe nor wake: <br \/>Rise up Gabriel and goe with me,<br \/>The stick nor the stake shall never deere thee.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Thomas Potts\u2019s A Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster, the official trial transcripts: Mother Demdike\u2019s family charm \u201cto get drink\u201d: Crucifixus hoc signum vitam Eternam.
