(Literal translation: the crucifix is the sign of eternal life.<\/em>)<\/p>\n

This charm to cure bewitchment is attributed to Chattox:<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Charme<\/em><\/p>\n

Three Biters hast thou bitten,
\nThe Hart, ill Eye, ill Tonge:
\nThree bitter shall be thy Boote,
\nFather, Sonne, and Holy Ghost
\na Gods name,
\nFiue Pater-nosters, fiue Auies,
\nand a Creede,
\nIn worship of fiue wounds
\nof our Lord.<\/p>\n

(In modern language the last part would read: five Pater-Nosters, five Ave Marias, and a Creed, in the worship of the five wounds of our Lord\u2014the cunning woman would then say these prayers while contemplating the five wounds of Christ.<\/em>)<\/p>\n
